David Rudisha hat bei den Olympischen Spielen in London die Goldmedaille über 800 m gewonnen und dabei den ersten Leichtathletik-Weltrekord der Spiele aufgestellt. Der 23-jährige kenianische Ausnahmeläufer stürmte nach 1:40,91 Minuten ins Ziel. Damit verbesserte er seine eigene Bestzeit, die er vor zwei Jahren in Rieti aufgestellt hatte, um eine Zehntelsekunde.

Im Alleingang und natürlich ohne Tempomacher rannte David Rudisha von Beginn an vorneweg. In seinem Sog lief der zweitplatzierte Nijel Amos (Botswana) mit 1:41,73 Minuten die achtbeste Zeit aller Zeiten und stellte einen Junioren-Weltrekord auf. Bronze gewann der Kenianer Timothy Kitum mit 1:42,53.

Auch bezüglich der Breite der Weltklassezeiten war dieses Finale von London der beste 800-m-Lauf aller Zeiten: Alle acht Läufer blieben unter 1:44 Minuten. Sieben der acht Finalisten stellten persönliche Bestzeiten auf.

David Rudisha, der vor vier Jahren die Qualifikation für Peking verpasst hatte, weil er verletzungsbedingt bei den kenianischen Ausscheidungen nicht hatte starten können, wollte als ganz großer Favorit jeglicher Sturzgefahr aus dem Weg gehen und setzte sich unmittelbar nach dem Start an die Spitze. Durchweg hielt der aktuelle Weltmeister das Tempo hoch.

Nach 49,28 Sekunden passierte David Rudisha die 400-m-Marke. Hinter ihm liefen zu diesem Zeitpunkt Abubaker Kaki (Sudan) und Mohammed Aman (Äthiopien), die später auf die Ränge sieben und sechs zurückfallen sollten. Den 600-m-Punkt erreichte David Rudisha in 1:14,30 Minuten. Auf der Zielgeraden sah es kurzzeitig so aus, als könne der inzwischen auf Rang zwei liegende Nijel Amos den Abstand noch einmal deutlich verkürzen. Doch David Rudisha brach nicht ein und hielt das atemberaubende Tempo durch.

„Ich bin sehr froh. Auf diesen Moment habe ich lange warten müssen. Hierher zu kommen und den Weltrekord zu brechen, ist unglaublich. Ich hatte keine Zweifel daran, dass ich gewinnen würde und das Wetter war hervorragend – deswegen entschied ich, den Weltrekord anzugreifen", sagte David Rudisha. „Lord Coe ist ein guter Freund von mir. Als ich im Februar hier war, hat er mir das Olympiastadion gezeigt. Ich wollte hierher kommen und ihn stolz machen." Sebastian Coe ist der Präsident des Organisationskomitees der Spiele von London und der frühere 800-m-Weltrekordler (1:41,73).

Hinter den Medaillengewinnern belegten Duane Solomon (USA/1:42,82), Nick Symmonds (USA/1:42,95), Mohammed Aman (Äthiopien/1:43,20), Abubaker Kaki (Sudan/1:43,32) und Andrew Osagie (Großbritannien/1:43,77) die nächsten Plätze in dem einmaligen Rennen bei perfekten Wetterbedingungen.
