Women’s 10,000m – PREVIEW – Tirunesh Dibaba hopes to plunder the one title missing from her vast collection
Tirunesh Dibaba hopes to plunder the one title missing from her vast collection as the Ethiopian eyes Olympic gold.
Dibaba, the three-time world 10,000m champion, is enjoying another stellar year. In March she landed the world cross country title in Edinburgh and in June she sliced four seconds from the 5000m World record in Oslo with 14:11.15.
Her 10,000m form this year is also rock solid after landing the African title in May and then winning in a season’s best of 31:03.37 in Ostrava.
Dibaba faces strong opposition from inside her own the family as her sister, Ejegayehu, is also a major threat. The older Dibaba sibling won Olympic silver in Athens four years ago and finished a close runner up to Tirunesh in her two 10,000m outings this season.
The fastest Ethiopian this year, however, is Mestawet Tufa. After an injury ravaged 2007 season Tufa has won a world cross country silver medal also posted 30:38.33 for victory in Nijmegen in May.
