USA Track & Field – News – Jordan Hasay named Athlete of the Week after impressive half marathon debut

By admin 0

INDIANAPOLIS — Jordan Hasay (Fontana, California) crushed her first half marathon in 1:08:40, the fastest by an American woman and No. 6 U.S. all time in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon.

Hasay’s time was less than one minute short of the American record (1:07:34), proving her strength as a serious contender in the half marathon. The Oregon Project runner’s fourth-place finish put her behind winner Veronicah Wanjiru Nyaruai, Dera Dida Yami and 2016 champion Mary Wacera.

"I had so much fun racing in my first half marathon. The crowds in Houston were great and my family were all able to attend as well which made the race extra special,” Hasay said. “I'm honored to have joined a list of extraordinarily accomplished athletes on the all-time half marathon list and look forward to my debut in the full marathon distance in Boston this April."

Hasay continues training for the 2017 Boston Marathon on April 17.

Other notable performances include:

Christian Coleman (Atlanta, Georgia) ran the fastest 60m in the world this year at the Commodore Invitational, breaking the facility record in 6.54.

Kaela Edwards (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) of Oklahoma State broke the collegiate record in the women's 1,000 meters with a 2:40.79 at Nebraska's Holiday Inn Invitational.

Kate Grace (Sacramento, California) made a last lap push to the front to win the women’s 3000m at UW Indoor Preview, setting a new Dempsey facility record in 8:47.26.

Leonard Korir (Colorado Springs, Colorado) beat 2016 Olympic silver medalist in the marathon, Feyisa Lilesa, at the Aramco Houston Half Marathon in 1:01:14.

Sydney McLaughlin (New Brunswick, New Jersey) ran the second-fastest 300m in U.S. prep history at the Molloy Stanner Games. Her time of 37.11 is just behind national high school record holder Francena McCorory’s 36.96.

Now in its 16th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
