Under nearly perfect running conditions, 36F/2C, Jynocel Basweti, 20 years old of Kenya, became the youngest winner of the ATT/Austin Marathon and remained undefeated as a marathoner. Jynocel sliced 2 minutes off of his Quad City Marathon win with a 2.14.02 course record.

The tiny „Nandie Bear“ trained for the ATT/Austin Marathon in famous Ngong Hills outside of Nairobi, where marathon WR holder, Paul Tergat(KEN) also trains. The Austin course, is rather hilly from mile 7 to mile 11, as Jynocel started out slowly, to pass all but early leader, Ukraine’s Mikhail Khobotov. Just after 11 miles, Jynocel passed Khobotov and ran solo to the finish line.

Defending champion Wesley Ngetich(KEN) and Aleksandr Vasiliyev(RUS) finished over 2 minutes back of the young champion’s PR in 2.16.45 and 2.17.01. Three Americans qualified for the US Olympic Marathon in NYC in November, Teren Jameson, Greg Costello and Daniel Ellis

In the woman race, Austonite, Desiree Ficker(USA), who finished 2nd in the World Ironman Triathlon Championships was running her first serious marathon. Desiree stuck with the lead pack which consisted of eventual winner, Zebenaye Moges(ETH), ageless wonder, Firaya Sultanova(RUS), and Elena Vinitskaya(BLS).
As Moges went on to win in 2.39.46, Ficker(2.40.28) remained with Sultanova until the final mile as she stated „I was too afraid of going too fast and blowing up“ and waited to long to leave Sultanova who finished 3rd in 2.40.55.

Other notables were former WR Holder Henry Rono, who ran his first race in a long time finishing the ATT Half Marathon in 1.41.12
