NEW YORK (June 4, 2015) — New York Road Runners celebrated National Running Day yesterday with activities across the five boroughs for New Yorkers of all ages and abilities, including group runs and walks, water stations in parks, giveaways, and their largest youth running event of the year—the Mighty Milers Fun Run.
The Mighty Milers Fun Run was NYRR’s flagship National Running Day event, and nearly 2,000 Mighty Milers from New York City public schools throughout the five boroughs took over Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island in Manhattan in a year-end celebration of running.
Activities included 400- and 800-meter runs, infield games, relay races, an obstacle course, and more. Two-time New York City Marathon runner-up (2011 and 2013) and Bronx resident Buzunesh Deba helped celebrate with the youth runners at the iconic National Running Day event.
NYRR hosted a number of other special events and activities throughout the five boroughs, empowering kids, seniors, first-time participants, and longtime runners to embrace running as a way to better lives and build community, and to celebrate the power and benefits of running and fitness.
Highlights included a Breakfast Run on the Upper East Side, a morning Senior Striders walk on Randall’s Island, and water stations and giveaways in parks across the five boroughs, including Central Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island, and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. In the evening, group runs and runner-friendly happy hours took place on the Upper West and East Side, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.
