RUNNING GERMANY – BERLIN – 100 Miles Berlin on the 20th of August, 2011 with 100 runners to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the erecting of the Berlin Wall – Alexander v. Uleniecki reports
On the 20th of August, 2011, approximately 100 runners will start in the first-ever Berlin 100-Mile-Run!
The figure was provided at the end of the official registration by the organizing club; Long-Distance Runners of the Berlin Wall Trail (Langstreckenlauf-Gemeinschaft Mauerweg e.V.)
Among the participants are not only running greats from this region, such as favorites Michael Vanicek and Jan Prochanska from LG Nord Ultrateam, but there are notable athletes from abroad. Seeking to put the historic 160.9 kilometers under their feet together are "father and son" John and Andrew Kraus from the USA.
British runner Mark Cockbain will travel a bit extra from his residence in Hong Kong to join in the premiere run in Berlin. Good results are also expected from Italian ultra-runner Pier Roberto Zanda and also Canadian Nathalie Vendette. Also hitting the Wall Trail are the German Ultra-Cracks consisting of Heike Pawzik (Rostock), Klaus Neumann (Stuttgart), Klaus Wanner (Holzgerlingen) and Werner Selch (Amberg), all four having finished the 2009 TransEurope-FootRace (TEFR).
The 100 Miles Berlin race will start at 06:00 on the 20th of August from the sport center on Lobeckstraße in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin. The race will be held under the auspices of the former East German civil rights leader,
Rainer Eppelmann and will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the erecting of the Berlin Wall.
Therefore the route is almost entirely along the former patrol tracks of the border guards.
