Röthlin and Martinez lead Swiss team for Osaka
European marathon silver medallist Viktor Röthlin and Triple Jumper Alexander Martinez have been named to lead the 12-strong Swiss team for Osaka.
Reflecting a recent upward swing in the strength of Swiss athletics, the team is the largest to represent the country at this level since the 1995 World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg.
Röthlin, who took a memorable silver medal behind Olympic champion Stefano Baldini in Gothenburg last year, will be among the favourites to take gold in the oppressive heat in Osaka.
Currently the second fastest European in 2007, after his impressive 2:08.20 win in the Zurich marathon in April, Röthlin is a noted championship performer and will be looking to go one place better than in Gothenburg.
Martinez, on the other hand has recently set a new Swiss record of 17.13m at a meeting in La Chaux-de-Fonds and will be hoping to make the final 12 in Osaka. As a former Cuban international, Martinez boasts a personal best of 17.51m set in 2005.
