ORLEN Warsaw Marathon – Sunday, 13 April 2014 – Run a marathon in the very heart of Europe! Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinic Carolina Medical Center to be the Medical Partner of ORLEN Warsaw Marathon

By GRR 0

Just as in the previous year, doctors, physiotherapists, trainers and masseurs from Carolina Medical Center will offer support to runners during ORLEN Warsaw Marathon. The Warsaw clinic, medical partner of also the Polish Olympic Committee and the Polish National Ballet, is one of the most modern orthopaedic and sports medicine centres in Europe.

This cooperation will ensure that ORLEN Warsaw Marathon participants will be attended by first-class physiotherapists. A marathon run constitutes a considerable effort for the body. In order to cope with such exertion runners need to know how exactly their physiology functions. Medical and physiotherapeutic support during ORLEN Warsaw Marathon will be provided by the specialists from Carolina Medical Center. Our last year’s cooperation was more than fine and hence we have decided to continue this partnership also during this year’s edition of the event – says Leszek Kurnicki, Head of the ORLEN Warsaw Marathon Organising Committee.

Every runner who wants to safely accomplish their sporting goals and take pleasure in it, should value the knowledge of experts who help professional sportsmen and sports enthusiasts on a daily basis. I’m very glad that once again we will be able to share our knowledge and experience in sports medicine with ORLEN Warsaw Marathon participants – says Paweł Daroszewski, physiotherapist and motoric training specialist from Carolina Medical Center.

Experts from Carolina Medical Center would like to remind all runners that preparations to a marathon run, apart from reasonably planned training sessions, should include also a proper dietary regime and drinking plenty of water, both before, during and after the race. In order to have the energy for pulling off such a feat, the body needs to be supplied with a varied diet, rich in all nutrients, including simple and compound sugars.

During the run you may lose up to 2-4 litres per hour while dehydration at the level of 4-5% of the body weight may reduce your muscle strength by 20-30%. Drinking lots of water may not be sufficient if one fails to remember about proper nourishment. Isotonic drinks with a balanced amount of carbohydrates and sodium may be a good alternative, as they help the organism regain the electrolyte balance – explains Mateusz Janik, doctor from the Division for Sports Injuries Treatment at Carolina Medical Center. Isotonic drinks have osmolality similar to that of body cells and thus are better absorbed by the organism. The easiest way to assess the level of our dehydration is to weigh oneself before and after the run. To each kilogram lost we should respond with drinking between 1.2 to 1.5 litres of liquids – adds Janik.

In the Runners Area located at the National Stadium grounds participants will be able to take part in free functional tests and the FMS (Functional Movement Screening) test. Moreover, at the Carolina Medical Center stand contestants will be able to seek advice from physiotherapists and trainers as well as obtain detailed information on the Runner’s Package offered by the clinic specifically to all active runners. Experts from Carolina Medical Center will also organise an official warm-up before the start.
