Aiming to build bridges between Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the first Friendship Games were held in October 2010 with around 500 young people taking part.

Through the event adolescents from Burundi and the DRC were shown the universal values of tolerance, respect and honesty conveyed by sport, and that it is possible to understand each other, communicate and coexist peacefully.

The Games were supported by Burundi’s Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Burundian Olympic Committee, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Sports as well as by Peace and Sport.

The organisers have announced that the Friendship Games will continue to be held annually to promote sustainable peace between communities in both countries.
