Implementing Decisions Taken at General Assembly

On 12th and 13th September 2017 the ICSSPE Executive Board and Development Committee met for the first time after the extra-ordinary General Assembly held earlier this year.

According to its areas of activity, Science, Education, Policy, ICSSPE continues to reorganise its structure which as of January 1st 2018, will be composed of scientific and educational organisations and institutions, non-governmental sport organisations, as well as governmental sport, health and education authorities.

With the dissolution of the President’s Committee, it was decided that the Executive Board will also meet in quarterly Teleconferences. Unless requested for specific needs, it will accept observers to its annual meetings.

During their meeting, members of the Development Committee agreed that vision, mission and the decision on the respective biennial working programmes of the organisation should consequently steer the various activities of the organisation. This includes the planning of events, the production of publications as well as the awarding of grants to member organisations. Additionally, Committee members demanded an effective communication strategy for internal as well as for external information exchange.

It was also decided to postpone a discussion around a possible name change of ICSSPE.

One Step Closer To a Martial Arts Coaching Framework – Prime Meeting in Oxford

ICSSPE Project Members and project partners met to discuss progress of their exciting project Participation, Recreation and Inclusion through Martial Arts Education (PRIME).

The meeting took place at Balliol College, Oxford University, and included discussions of assessment frameworks, support material development, and international policies for persons with a disability.

Funded by the European Union’s ERASMUS+ scheme, PRIME seeks to develop a high-quality coaching framework to support the promotion of healthy martial arts participation among persons with a disability. This framework will be the first of its kind, it will be compatible with the European Qualification Framework (EQF), and constitute a model for global initiatives.

It is a two-year project, so 2018 will see the development of its outputs, primarily a new coaching framework, teaching materials for martial arts coaches, and a specialist website.

The PRIME partnership brings together organisations from different EU Member States. In addition to four groups at the forefront of inclusive practices in martial arts, such as Ikkaido, the Association of Wado Karate Do Kai Shin Gi Tai Italy, the International Taekwondo Federation and Hayashi Karatecenter e.V., the partnership includes the International Council for Coaching Excellence, the UNESCO Chair Transforming the Lives of People with Disabilities, their Families and Communities, Through Physical Education, Sport, Recreation and Fitness at Tralee Institute of Technology, Ireland, The Association For International Sport for All and, as project manager, the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education. The Project is supported by the Sports Coaching Science with Disability Sport Team at the University of Worcester, UK.

The next PRIME meeting will take place early in 2018, in Edinburgh. Please contact the ICSSPE Office for further information.

Sport and Health – New ICSSPE Perspectives Published

With sport being increasingly used to deliver public health interventions, this book critically examines the rationale and evidence for sport as a public health policy tool.

By collecting contributions from the United Kingdom, United States, Europe and Australia, the editors Daniel Parnell and Peter Krustrup shed new light on an emerging field of research which has significant implications for public health across the globe.

Each chapter looks at the effectiveness of sport interventions across the lifespan for biological, psychological and social benefits, including those that utilise a settings-based approach to health promotion such as schools and professional sport clubs. Drawing on cutting-edge research which examines policy and practice at community and elite levels, this book addresses key topics such as education, engaging children and young adults, mental health, sport sponsorship and volunteering.

Sport and Health: Exploring the Current State of Play published in ICSSPE’s Perspectives series is important reading for all students, scholars and policy makers with an interest in the sociology of sport, physical activity and public health.

By publishing Perspectives, ICSSPE aims to facilitate the application of sport scientific findings to practical areas of sport by integrating a wide variety of fields. The themes of the Perspectives series come from ICCSPE members, partners, and friends and are evaluated by its Development Committee.

ICSSPE members will receive a 20% reduction when ordering the book through the Routledge website.
