European Athletics permitted Lotto Crosscup attracts Belguim’s top runners
Belgium’s top Cross Country runners will meet this weekend at the classic ‘Lotto Crosscup van de Provincie West-Vlaanderen’ in Roeselare.
This European Athletic permitted event is the second individual competition of the Lotto Crosscup. At stake, are four places to compete at the SPAR European Championships in December in Toro, Spain.
In Mol, where the first cross was held, Pieter Desmet, Belgium’s first finisher in last year’s SPAR European Cross Country Championship, won with verve. He will also be the favourite in Roeselare.
Desmet’s greatest home-grown opponents are Tom Van Hooste, Hans Janssens, Jesse Stroobants and Willem Van Hoof. However, there will also be stiff competition from Sergei Zachepa (Ukraine), Rocardo Ribas (Portugal), Andreas Ahwall and Patrick Tjardahl, (Sweden), Marc Riog (Spain) and some top performing African runners.
In the womens race, Veerle Dejaeghere, the Belgian number one, will have to deal with Nathalie De Vos, Stefanie De Croock, Rosemary Kitushi and Sigrid Vanden Bempt.
Her foreign competitors are Mimi Belete (Ethiopia), Suzanne Ritter (Germany), Gladys Otero (Kenya), Adrienne Herzog (Netherlands), Yulija Ruban (Ukraine), and Romanian’s Acunta Bobocel and Paula Todoran.
