European Athletics News -Torino 2009 online!

The 30th edition of the European Indoor Championships will be the highest profile athletics event organised in Italy in the last decade. Hosted by the city of Torino, the event will build on the success and the atmosphere left behind by its recent unforgettable edition of the Winter Olympic Games.

The new website contains a detailed History section, as well as some basic information about the venue of the Championships and the city of Torino, but very soon the website will contain all the information about the event, including accommodation procedures and tickets.

This Championship, which will take place from on the 6-8 March 2009, will be the fourth European Indoor Championship to be staged in Italy, after those of Milan (1978,1982) and Genova (1992). The competition will be held in ‚The Oval‘, a large indoor space that hosted the speed skating Olympic events.

In the indoor-athletics configuration, the Oval will house up to 6600 spectators, and all the spaces needed for athletes, members of the delegations, guests, and the media. Furthermore, the local organising committee is planning a program of other events (music, parades, etc.) related to the Championships, in order to encourage the participation of the city in this hugely important sports event.

On the 11-12 December, a delegation from European Athletics will travel to Torino for a site visit: on that occasion, the setup plan of the Oval will be finalised, and some other organisational steps will be made in the fields of communication and marketing.
