European Athletics (EAA) – News – Demut gets German triple jump record and impressive long jumping in Wese
Katja Demut achieved a German triple jump record of 14.57m at a meeting in Wesel on Monday, adding 11 centimetres to the former mark which had stood to Helga Radke since 1994.
I’m very happy but I know that technically there is still a lot more to come. The jump can be even better. However, the conditions were great, there was always a nice tailwind.” said they delighted Demut.
Personally I did not expect the record. I was still really tired from the competition in Oslo on Thursday. I didn’t feel fresh when I was jumping but sometimes you are deceived by your own body,” added Demut, who also acquired the German indoor record in February when she leapt out to 14.47m at the European Athletics Indoor Permit Meeting in Düsseldorf.
There was also some great long jumping in Wesel with Germany’s Bianca Kappler flying out to 6.81m, just nine centimetres short of her best, to defeat Turkey’s Karin Melis Mey who was second with 6.66m.
Germany’s 2010 European Athletics Championships long jump gold medallist Christian Reif showed that he is also starting to get into his stride with a leap of 8.26m, the second best performance in Europe this year.
Behind Reif, the German pair of Alyn Camara and Oliver Konig both set personal bests in second and third place, jumping 8.08m and 8.07m respectively.
There were also some good vertical jumps by European athletes at a German meeting in Rehlingen on Monday night
France’s Abdoulaye Diarra won the high jump with 2.24m while Great Britain’s Steven Lewis cleared 5.62m to win the pole vault. Germany’s Kristina Gadschiew was the best in the women’s pole vault with 4.45m.
Poland´s Igor Janik, who will compete at the SPAR European Team Championships in Stockholm this weekend, won the javelin in Rehlingen with 81.94m while Germany’s 2010 European Athletics Championships silver medallist Matthias De Zordo again struggled to impress and was only third with 76.65m.
