Athletics South Africa – News – SAMSON, TSHAMANO AND THE ‘BLADE RUNNER’ AMONG THE STARS AT THE NEW YELLOW PAGES SUMMER SERIES IN STELLENBOSCH

Middle distance runners Samson Ngoepe and Tshamano Setone have set their sights on running a sub four minute mile, while Oscar ‘Blade Runner’ Pistorius is set to turn on the speed, when the opening leg of the Yellow Pages Summer Series takes place at the Coetzenburg stadium in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape on Friday, December 10.

The world-famous Coetzenburg venue is expected to be the scene of a carnival atmosphere, with Ngoepe, Setone and the other mile stars set to challenge bravely for the R5000 prize money to be handed to the first athlete to dip under 4 minutes during the Yellow Pages Summer Series.

Pistorius’ showdown against Eastern Province sprinter Leigh Julius over 150 metres could be another highlight of the meeting, while Stellenbosch athletes in Cornel Fredericks (300 metres hurdles), Hilton Langenhoven (long jump) and Janice Josephs (long jump) will give the crowd much to cheer about.

Another Port Elizabeth-based sprinter, Cindy Stewart (in the 60 metres event), plus 400 metres star Ofentse Mogawane (participating in the 300 metres), will add further spice to the first major track and field event of the new season.

The Coetzenburg stadium will open at 13h00 on December 10, with the first 500 athletics fans through the gates to each receive a complimentary Yellow Pages hat.
Tickets for the meeting are priced at R25 (adults) and R10 (children) with the pre-programme starting at 15h00.

“Yellow Pages need to be commended for backing Athletics SA’s vision of establishing a Yellow Pages Summer Series that will allow SA’s star athlete to finish the 2010 year of in fine style when the series visits Stellenbosch, Oudtshoorn (Monday, December 13), Port Elizabeth (Wednesday, December 15) and Parow in the Western Cape (Saturday, December 18),” said Athletics SA board chairman: James Evans.

“A mile event will be held during each of the meetings and if the athletes do not run under 4 minutes in Stellenbosch, the money will be carried over to the next meeting of the series. Should the R5000 for the first athlete to go faster than 4 minutes be claimed, other athletes dipping under the 4 min barrier will each receive R1000.”
Lionel Smith, GM Marketing of Trudon (publishers of Yellow Pages) said: “Yellow Pages is a firm supporter of South Africa’s track and field stars and believe that the addition of the four-event Yellow Pages Summer Series to the ASA calendar will create further opportunities for our athletes to strive for fast times, far and high jumps and far throws in this exciting sport.”
