Athletics South Africa – News – NEW-LOOK ASA CALENDAR SETS UP ACTION-PACKED YELLOW PAGES TRACK AND FIELD SEASON

SA track and field stars will be out to shine and take full advantage of the new-look Athletics SA calendar 2011, when Yellow Pages athletics action reaches all parts of the country, starting in February next year.

Following on from the new addition Yellow Pages Summer Series meetings to be held in Stellenbosch, Western Cape (Friday, 10 December 2010), Oudtshoorn (Monday, 13 December 2010), Port Elizabeth (Wednesday, 15 December 2010) and Parow, Western Cape (Saturday, 18 December 2010), the 2011 summer season will start with a Yellow Pages Series event in Potchefstroom on Saturday, February 19.

Tshwane athletics enthusiasts will get their chance to witness the fun and excitement of action-packed Yellow Pages Series athletics when the second event of the Yellow Pages Series is held in South Africa’s capital city, Pretoria on Friday, February 25.

The Yellow Pages Series will then make its way down to the coast to the famous Coetzenburg stadium in Stellenbosch for action on Thursday, March 10.

 

ASA will be looking to put the ‘team’ element back into athletics with two new addition Yellow Pages Interprovincial Series events on the calendar. The track and field meetings to be held in Germiston, near Johannesburg (Saturday, March 26) and Bellville, near Cape Town (Saturday, April 16), will allow provinces and associates of ASA to enter teams (20 athletes per team comprising 10 men and 10 women). Points will be scored according to the IAAF points table.

The country’s leading young athletes will get their chance to take centre stage when the Yellow Pages ASA Junior and Youth Championships capture the attention of the country’s sports-loving public, when they are held in Germiston, near Johannesburg on April 2-3.

With the IAAF World Championships set to take place in Daegu, South Korea from August 27 to September 4, the cream of SA’s athletes will be out to deliver fast times, far throws and long and high jumps, when the Yellow Pages ASA Senior Championship is held in Durban on April 8-9.

Student athletics is expected to reach a new high in 2011, with Yellow Pages sponsoring the Yellow Pages ASA Student Championships which will take place in Stellenbosch from April 28-30.

“With the addition of the 4 Yellow Pages Summer Series events in December and the re-positioning of the Yellow Pages Series and Yellow Pages Interprovincial Series dates, I am confident that the new-look calendar is athlete-friendly and in the interest of allowing our athletes to deliver quality performances at the right times of the season in line with the bigger picture of doing SA proud on the international stage later in the year,” said ASA board chairman James Evans.
