NEW ZEALAND 10,000m CHAMPIONSHIP
Tauranga Domain, Tauranga – 3 January 2012
Stephen Lett retains national 10km title, Sally Gibbs smashes NZ masters W45 record

Stephen Lett retained his New Zealand 10,000m title while 48 year old Sally Gibbs won the women’s title in a New Zealand W45 masters record at the Tauranga Domain Tuesday evening.

Lett won, in the slowest winning time in the history of the championship, in 30m 36.35s, beating Luke Hurring who recorded 30m 57.25s.

Jonathan Jackson was third in 31m 7.59s with Cory Whiting fourth in 31m 40.92s.
Gibbs carved 50 seconds off Bernie Portenski’s 1998 W45 record of 35m 35.5s in collecting her first national senior women’s title in 34m 45.21s.
Sarah Biss was second in 35m 9.79s with Kellie Palmer third in 35m 39.21s.

Alex Gorrie won the M20 title in 32m 3.31s from Malcolm Hodge 34m 28.46s and Taylor Gilmer 34m 59.83s. Just over two weeks ago Gorrie ran 32m 21.69s in Dunedin.

Hamish Carson in his debut over the distance won the 5000m in 14m 20.08s, from Brett Tingay 14m 24.91s, Stephen Lett 14m 27.55s, Alex Parlane 14m 33.09s, Andrew Haigh 14m 35.46s, Stephan Smith 14m 39.29s, Kyle Macdonald 14m 45.22s and Jono Jackson 14m 46.46s.
Fiona Crombie won the women’s 5000m in 16m 25.31s, from Lydia O’Donnell 16m 26.72s, Elizabeth May (Luxembourg) 17m 43.32s, Tara La Grange 17m 53.50s, Debbie Tanner 17m 56.68s and Robyn Young 18m 00.07s.

Shot Put Invitational, Sovereign Stadium North Shore – 22 December 2011
Jacko Gill competed in the M19 6kg shot put sending the shot out to 21.71m, short of his national M18, M19 record of 22.31m set on 5 December. Tom Walsh was second with 20.19m. Tom Walsh also took part in the senior 7.26kg shot winning with 17.18m. Nicholas Gerrard was second with a PB senior shot of 14.26m. Alex Fafeita won the 5kg shot with 16.18m. Ana Po’uhila won the women’s shot with 16.10m. Te Rina Keenan was second with 14.24m.

Pakuranga 5km Series, 19 December: Jay Wallwork 17m 35s from Ray Wang 17m 40s. Rebecca Williams 20m 49s.
O’Hagan’s Viaduct 5km,
20 December: Matthew Battley 16m 47s from Warick Brenan 16m 49s. Jane Anderson 18m 57s.

HAMILTON

Eastside 5km River Run, 20 December: Garit Read won in 16m 42s from Scott Thorne 17m 14s, Eli Thomas 17m 58s. Olivia Ritchie was fourth overall in 18m 3s. Isobel Ewing was second woman in 19m 49s.

MT MAUNGANUI
King and Queen of the Mountain Races – 26 December 2011

Daniel Jones won the annual 4.5km climb to the summit of Mt Maunganui and back to the beach in 19m 17s, beating Iain Macdonald by seven seconds. Todd Rowan was third in 19m 55s with Nick Portas fourth in 20m 19s. Angus Bell first to the top in 10m 55s was fifth in 20m 22s with Ben Ruthe sixth in 21m 14s. Helen Rountree won the Queen of the mountain title in 23m 23s. Tessa Behrent was second in 25m 32s with Emily Gear third in 25m 41s.

New Year’s Day Twilight Meeting – 1 January 2012

Joseph Millar won the 100m in 10.69s (+2.7), from Schools’ champion Kodi Harman 10.75s and Ryan Howe 10.96s. Harman turned the tables on Millar in the 200m winning in 21.73s (+2.2). Millar recorded 21.83s with Daniel Dyet third in 22.58s. Alex Jordan won the 400m in 47.55s, from Millar 48.77s and Harman 51.75s. Kerry White won the women’s 400m in 60.99s from Maggie Unternahrer 62.35s.

Craig Lautenslager of Nelson won the 3000m in 9m 4.47s from fast finishing Ben Ruthe 9m 9.08s and Cory Whiting 9m 13.08s. Camille Buscomb won the women’s 3000m in 10m 7.38s from Ariana Lord 10m 56.79s and Anneke Grogan 11m 6.69s.

Julian Oakley triumphed in the 800m clocking 1m 54.34s heading in Ben Moynihan 1m 55.88s and Reid Hunter 1m 56.54s. Anna Bramley won the women’s 800m in 2m 15.70s from Melanie Fayan 2m 20.46s and Jessica Bitcheno 2m 25.87s.
In the field events Nicholas Gerrard won the M20 discus 1.75kg 40.69m, shot put 6kg 15.86m and long jump 6.89m (+2.4) while Joseph Reynolds cleared 1.95m in the M20 high jump.

WELLINGTON
Scottish Night of Miles – 17 December 2011
Hamish Carson won the senior mile in 4m 14.03s from Cary Chaffee 4m 23.44s. Other winners Caroline Mellsop SW 5m 9.02s, Yared Kebede M19 4m 25.01s, Marcus Karamanolis M16 4m 34.24s, Stephen Day MM 4m 53.44s, Anna Hare MW 5m 36.19s. Mile walk won by Andrew Paton 9m 10.84s and Terri Grimmett 9m 11.55s.
Kieron McDonald won the M19 400m in 51.91s.

Lifestyle Sports Waterfront 5km Series, 20 December: Cameron Goldsmid won 15m 47s from Grant McLean 16m 18s and Adam Steinmetz 16m 24s. Gabrielle O’Rourke first woman in 17m 24s with Emily Solsberg second in 18m 44s. John Roskvist walk in 29m 1s, Terri Grimmett 30m 1s.

Jesse Bryant M16 javelin 41.93m, 400m 55.82s. Hayden Hall M19 shot put 12.99m, discus throw 49.09m. Tim McKee SM pole vault 4.00m. Cameron Mills M19 3000m 9m 20.90s. Sam Fitzgerald M19 400m 54.01s, long jump 5.48m (-1.7). Hannah Molony W17 triple jump 10.08m (-0.3). Kelsey Berryman 200m 27.4s h (-0.2).

International Track Meeet
A Brian Taylor Memorial 3000m has been established to be staged at the International Track meet at Christ’s College on 4 February. The race will honour Canterbury coach Brian Taylor who lost his life in the February earthquake. Double Commonwealth Games silver medallist Nikki Hamblin and Fiona Crombie will contest the inaugural race. The Meet will also be a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Sir Peter Snell’s world 800m/880yds records set on grass at Lancaster Park in February 1962.

VALERIE ADAMS – HALBERG AWARDS FINALIST
Olympic and World shot put champion Valerie Adams is a finalist for the Sportswoman of the Year in the Halberg Awards to be announced at the awards dinner in Auckland on February 9. Adams has been the Sportswoman of the Year for each of the last five years. This year she is up against Lisa Carrington (Canoeing), Jo Edwards (Bowls) and Andrea Hewitt (Triathlon). Adams, winning the world title in Daegu in August, is also one of the six favourite sporting moments that can be voted on by going to www.skysport.co.nz 
Jacko Gill is a finalist for the Emerging Talent honours at the Halberg Awards. Last year Gill was out-voted by swimmer Gareth Kean for the award.

Track and Field News has voted Valerie Adams number three female athlete in the world in 2011, behind Vivian Cheruiyot and Sally Pearson. The magazine has voted David Rudisha male athlete of the year ahead of Usain Bolt and Robert Harting.

The Sunday News has named Valerie Adams as their Sportswoman of the year, stating that “things just keep getting better for Kiwi shot put Queen with 2011 being no exception to that rule. Only a year out from the London Olympics the 27 year-old athlete experienced a dream year, notching up a personal best shot put of 21.24m, putting herself in the driving seat for more glory in 2012.”
Valerie Adams is also a contender for the international Laureus Sportswoman of the Year. Adams is up against Australian track cycling champion Anna Meares, Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova and British swimming champion Rebecca Adlington.
