Athletics Australia – RIO 2016 NOMINATIONS – Athletics Australia Selectors announce intention to nominate five athletes for Rio 2016

Eloise Wellings (NSW) and David McNeill (Vic) will be nominated in the Women’s and Men’s 10,000m after their outstanding qualifying performances at the Australian 10,000m Championships in Melbourne (Vic) last month.

Wellings crossed to win in a qualifying time of 32:02.61 to ensure her automatic nomination, while McNeill reigned supreme in the men’s race having already clocked a qualifying time of 27:45.01 earlier in 2015.

In the Men’s 50km walk, Athletics Australia Selectors intend to nominate Chris Erickson (Vic), Brendon Reading (ACT) and Jared Tallent (Vic).

Erickson won the Australian 50km Race Walking Championships in December with a qualifying time of 3:54:10 to ensure his automatic nomination, with Reading and Tallent confirmed as nominees at the discretion of the selectors.

All intended nominations have been made in accordance with the Athletics Australia Olympic Nomination Policy.

Athletes not identified for nomination in the Men’s 50km walk have 48 hours to notify Athletics Australia of an intention to appeal their non-nomination. Notification in writing must be received by no later than 2pm on Friday 8 January 2016 to:

The AOC has appointed Mr Brian Collis QC of Melbourne and Mr Bruce Collins QC of Sydney as Olympic Appeals Consultants for the 2016 Australian Olympic Team.

Olympic Appeals Consultants will not provide legal advice concerning the prospects of success of any appeal against non-nomination, but will ensure that athletes fully understand the reasons for the decision, and the process of any appeal, should they wish to do so.
