Athletics Australia – News – SBS announced as home of 2011 IAAF world championships
Australian athletics fans are set to be thrilled by the IAAF world championships beginning this August, with SBS Television today confirming their intentions to screen 25 hours live from Daegu (KOR).
To be screened on SBS TWO on each and every night of the championships in prime time, SBS will broadcast the Australian Flame as they take on the world’s best at the 13th instalment of the world track and field titles.
Live coverage on SBS TWO will be accompanied by a further 10 hours of highlights as reigning world champions Dani Samuels and Steve Hooker hunt for consecutive crowns alongside a current Australian Flame team of 30.
The broadcast will be hosted by SBS’s David Basheer with expert commentary from former Australian track star Jane Flemming.
”The IAAF world championships are the jewel in the crown of international athletics and SBS is proud to broadcast extensive coverage live and on free-to-air TV,” Ken Shipp, Head of Sport at SBS, said.
Providing a catalyst for promoting athletics to sports fans across the country, Dallas O’Brien, Chief Executive of Athletics Australia, is excited about the opportunities the coverage deal brings.
“Athletics Australia is thrilled to know that in lounge rooms across Australia athletics and general sports fans alike can be entertained by Australia and the world’s best track and field stars,” O’Brien said.
“On the back of a 20 medal haul at the Commonwealth Games, the Australian Flame will again be looking to stamp their authority on the world stage as we look ahead to the 2012 Australian Athletics Tour and the big show that is the London Olympics.
“We wholeheartedly thank the IAAF and SBS Television for working with us in making this broadcast deal a possibility.”
SBS are set to announce their broadcast schedule for the IAAF world championships in the coming months, with further information to be made available by Athletics Australia and the network as this information comes to hand.
