Athletics Australia – News – Gynther appointed as Chief Executive of Athletics Queensland
The Board of Queensland Athletics is pleased to announce the appointment of David Gynther as Chief Executive Officer. Departing his current role as Athletics Australia's Manager of Sport in mid-January he will take up his new position on the 23rd of that month.
Gynther has over ten years’ experience in the executive management team at Athletics Australia serving also in the roles of Competition Manager & Development Manager.
Prior to his time in Melbourne, Gynther was Manager of Nudgee Sports Club where he was instrumental in the funding and development of the “blue” athletics track and securing the USA and Australian athletics teams for pre-Olympic training.
A parochial Queenslander at heart, Gynther competed as a sprinter under the tutelage of Ian Jones at Mayne Harriers from 1976 to 1989 and has been involved coaching Club and School based athletes from 1986 to 2001.
Asked about his new role Gynther said “I am obviously very excited to be returning home to Queensland, the best place to be on the planet in my view."
"More importantly, however, I am excited by the prospect of working with the new Board of Queensland Athletics in the critical task of developing and driving the sport of athletics to new heights in the Sunshine State.
"With the 2018 Commonwealth Games announcement and new QA governance restructure this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. We have the best female athlete in the World – Sally Pearson, the best Long Jumper in Mitchell Watt, we have some of the world’s greatest coaches and the largest and best talent pool in the school system.
"Queensland Athletics is the only State in Australia where athletics is flourishing outside the State capital thanks to the hard work that has been done by Athletics North Queensland. I believe that with sound leadership, unity of purpose and sound strategic direction we can take the sport of athletics to a new level. We have just over six years until the world’s eyes are on the Gold Coast.
"I look forward to working with all of the many talented and dedicated athletes, coaches, officials and administrators each day of those six year to ensure the best outcomes for our sport."
With thanks to Athletics Queensland
