On 21 January Chala Dechase and Eshetu Wendimu, second and third last year, return to the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon to contest the $250,000 first prize. In the absence of defending champion Haile Gebrselassie new rising start Eliud Kiptanui could be the man to frustrate them. In the women's race Helena Kirop faces a clutch of strong Ethiopian runners.
On 23 January action starts with the Tainan Ancient Capital Marathon in Chinese Taipei, followed by the Khon Kaen International Marathon in Thailand and the Vadodara Half Marathon in India.
In Europe the Mitja Marato de Santa Pola takes place in Spain. The Maraton Internacional de Culiacan is run in Mexico before the final event of the day in Hawaii: the Maui Oceanfront Marathon.
