25th anniversary of the ATHENS CLASSIC MARATHON on sunday, dedicated to the Balkan Champion Grigoris Lambrakis,

The Hellenic Amateur Athletics Federation (SEGAS) celebrates the 25th anniversary of the ATHENS CLASSIC MARATHON, dedicated to the Balkan Champion Grigoris Lambrakis, and invites all enthusiasts of sports and of the values that this Race represents, to participate in this historic event, which is being held on the authentic “original course”, starting from Marathon and finishing in the Panathinaikon Stadium.

The Athens Classic Marathon is a competition event, which comprehends important symbolisms on world peace and the power of human will, promoting at the same time the spirit of emulation and sports as a way of living and thinking.

This year’s event, organized under the Official Sponsorship of ALPHA BANK for the 7th consecutive year, meets all the high standards set by IAAF and AIMS. The organization of the “authentic” Athens Marathon goes beyond the idea of a simple sport competition and it is being transmuted into a big international sport and cultural celebration of the cities of Athens and Marathonas, in which all citizens contribute, in their own way, in making it an unforgettable experience for all participants.

Moreover, the first ever AIMS Marathon Symposium is organized this year in the City of Marathonas the day before the race (Saturday, 03 November 2007). The AIMS Marathon Symposium 2007 is organized by AIMS, IAAF, the City of Marathonas and SEGAS. The Opening Ceremony of the Athens Classic Marathon will be held the same day at the Marathon Tomb, where the soldiers of the Marathon Battle lie dead. Furthermore, an International Sport Tourism and Health EXPO is also being organized for the first time this year, at the Registration and Distribution Centre, in the Fencing Hall of the Hellenikon Olympic Sports Complex.

The event of the Athens Classic Marathon, apart from the race held on the original Marathon course, which – starting from this year – someone could even walk (power walking), includes two more road races (10km and 5km), addressing those who wish to experience the joy of participation. The 10km Road Race is being held on the last part of the Marathon course, while the 5km Road Race will be held, for the first time this year, in the Athens historical center, passing along Syntagma Square, Acropolis and other significant city monuments and buildings.

The Athens Classis Marathon Organizing Committee invites you all to participate in this event, and run on the footsteps of the legendary messenger of Ancient Athens, of the Olympic Champion Spyros Louis, and of the Balkan Champion Grigoris Lambrakis. Be part of history!
