A massive earthquake hit the Republic of Haiti capital, Port-au-Prince, at 16:53 local time on 12 January 2010, causing widespread damage and loss of life. Without usable infrastructure or effective government coordination, NGOs are struggling to provide essential aid and the situation continues to look bleak a week on.
After several days GSA Port-au-Prince team captain, Marina Gourgue, sent the GSA World Center an e-mail to let us know that she is thankfully alive. Her family also survived, although her mother was buried under the debris for 20 hours.
The crisis in Haiti is by no means over. It will take many months and years of recovery effort, long after the media attention has moved on.
