Protein-based sports drinks are of no benefit to the performance of athletes, scientists have concluded.

The sports-drink industry makes millions from drinks and other supplements and runners all over the UK add to that pot as we constantly search for products that will give an added boost to our energy, endurance or recovery.

However, when scientists at the University of Bath reviewed the effects of the supplements, they found the drinks offered no more benefits than the protein found in a normal balanced diet. Interestingly, we have news below of a study carried out at Exeter University that tells us of the benefits of nitric oxide, found naturally in beetroot.

Perhaps we should be seeking out the right foods from the greengrocer rather than supplements from the chemist!

Dr James Betts, from the university's Department for Health, reviewed the results of all existing research into the effects of supplements containing carbohydrates and protein.
