11 September 2012 – Yesterday afternoon, Team GB's Olympic and Paralympic athletes were cheered by several hundreds of thousands of people as they celebrated the success of the Games in a massive victory parade through central London.

The competitors were also honoured with a Union-Jack themed flypast over Buckingham Palace, led by the plane that brought the Olympic flame to the UK.

Around 800 athletes travelled on 21 floats which made their way through central London in over two hours.

The celebratory show which followed the parade featured performances from Amy MacDonald, the Pet Shop Boys and speeches from the athletes and the Prime Minister.

The final word of the event was reserved for the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson who, after joking how the Olympic spirit had managed to reach even the notoriously grumpy commuters on the capital's tubes and trains, thanked the athletes and the volunteers for the summer of a lifetime.
