IAU – IAU Presents the 4th Medical Conference on Ultrarunning „Going the Distance: Food and Fluid Intake to Optimize Performance and Minimize Disease“

It is our pleasure to bring to you the 4th IAU Medical Conference from Steenbergen, the Netherlands at the occasion of the 24 Hour World and European Championships.

This follows the successful organization of previous three editions of these medical conferences in Seoul, Brive and Winschoten. All of these were very well attended by interested delegations and host researchers.

The increased excitement about ultrarunning has been coupled with an increased interest in the medical research associated with the sport. This has been evident by the number of papers that have been and are continually being published on the subject.

This year, after discussion, we decided to concentrate on "Going the Distance: Food and Fluid Intake to Optimize Performance and Minimize Disease." This is imperative as we all appreciate that food and fluid play integral roles in optimizing performances.

Dr Andrew Bosch will touch on "Aids to improved recovery from training: The role of carbohydrate and protein". Dr. Tamara Hew-Butler will speak on "Hyponatremia, Rhabdomyolysis and Renal Failure in Ultradistance Runners". Please read on the next page a bit about our two very distinguished speakers.
