Virgin Money London Marathon – Edna Kiplagat: I dream of becoming a world record breaker

By admin 0
Reigning Virgin Money London Marathon champion Edna Kiplagat was confirmed last week as one of the star names in the elite women’s field for 2015. The 35-year-old, who has also won back-to-back World Championship marathons in Daegu and Moscow, will take on her compatriots Mary Keitany, Florence Kiplagat and Priscah Jeptoo, amongst others, over the 26.2 miles on Sunday 26 April.

Here she tells of her ambition to set a world record, her biggest inspiration and her route to the top.
As both world champion and reigning Virgin Money London Marathon champion, are you feeling the pressure to perform ahead of this year’s London race?

Definitely, because this time around the line-up is made up of the cream of the world's top women’s marathon runners. I know they will be fully prepared so I have to improve on my winning strategy of last year.

You’ve been on the podium in each of the last four London Marathons, how do you manage to be so consistent?

Firstly, I'm grateful to God for enabling me and my team to achieve that feat. It is sheer hard work, willpower, determination and teamwork that has brought us this far.

What did it mean to you to win in London last year after coming so close in previous years?

It had always been my dream to be part of the list of champions of the prestigious Virgin Money London Marathon, which is also one of the fastest marathon courses.

London is where Paula Radcliffe set the women’s world record 12 years ago. Do you think it will be beaten any time soon?

With former and current half-marathon world record holders and three London Marathon champions in the race this year, the world record is very possible with proper pace setting and conducive weather. The preparations that I and the other women put in, and the preparation from the race organisers is also important.

Do you think you could do it?

I can only say my dream after winning the world championships twice and also becoming a London champion is to become part of the list of world record breakers.

It’s a fantastic field in London this year, with Mary Keitany, Florence Kiplagat and Priscah Jeptoo the favourites to challenge you. How do you assess your opponents?

Indeed it is a fantastic field, with elite competitors that could pose a challenge. Nevertheless, I have improved on my tactics to match the level of this year’s field.

Apart from yourself and those three, do you see any other challengers in the field?

The field is very strong and I can’t overlook anyone. Anyone coming to compete in London means business.

Tell us a bit about your life before you became a professional marathon runner?

I first represented Kenya in the world junior cross country championships and track races back when I was 15 years old. I gradually graduated to seniors and then began doing well in road races. There was a journey of 10 years before I even began competing in marathons.

What do you like to do in your spare time away from running?

I like spending quality time with my family, assisting my children doing their homework and participating in youth and women’s empowerment projects. I also make monthly visits to the children I sponsor in schools in our region.

You have five children – do they help motivate you to perform at your best?

Absolutely, my children are my source of strength and inspiration. They are my light. I live for them.

Who is your sporting hero?

Not exactly a sporting hero, but my hero is Wangari Maathai. She spearheaded the Green Belt Movement to protect against the cutting down of trees in Kenya. She was the first woman in East Africa to earn a PhD and won the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize.
