Virgin London Marathon – Prince Harry to present London Marathon prizes
Prince Harry will present the winners' medals and prizes at the finish of the 2013 Virgin London Marathon, it was announced today by St James's Palace.
The Prince will attend the Marathon as Patron of the London Marathon Charitable Trust, a three-year role he took up in 2012. He will make presentations to the winners of the Virgin Money Giving Mini Marathon as well as all the medallists in the elite men's, women's, wheelchair and IPC Athletics Marathon World Cup races.
His Royal Highness will also meet a selection of volunteers involved with the administration of the race and members of St John Ambulance.
The London Marathon Charitable Trust was set up in 1981 to provide funding for recreation facilities in London from the income generated by the London Marathon. Over 32 years, it has allocated grants of nearly £50 million to more than 1,000 projects in areas of the country where the London Marathon stages events.
Since Prince Harry became its Patron, the London Marathon Charitable Trust has joined him and the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to support the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge. This initiative aims to protect 2,012 outdoor recreational spaces as a lasting legacy to The Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The London Marathon Trust has also awarded five marathon places to charities involved with the Charities Forum, a collective group of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's and Prince Harry's charitable patronages. The Forum gives 35 charities and organisations an opportunity to collaborate in raising money for their causes.
