To run a marathon or a half marathon is an exciting challenge and a highlight for thousands of amateur runners. The best way to approach this challenge is to have confidence, a realistic self-assessment and positive thinking. But a runner should only enter the race when he or she is fit because nothing is more important than health.
Drop-in Center for acute medical problems
The VCM medical center will again be available to check acute medical problems before the start to the Vienna City Marathon. A dedicated team of sports trauma surgeons, internal medicine physicians, doctors of sport medicine, sport medicine scientists and physical therapists will be standing-by to offer advice. This unique service will be available on Friday 4/25 and Saturday 4/26 at the Sport Exhibition Center and will offer a last pre-race check up and will help clarify any pressing medical issues runner might have.
Additional blood testing will be performed on Friday 4/25/08 and the result of the test will be available within 2 hours. To detect any cardiac problems ECG machines and cardiac ultrasound equipment will be available.
VCM Medical center under new management
Univ. Prof. Christian Gaebler will take over the management of the VCM Medical Center from Dr. Dagmar Rabensteiner, a former Austrian marathon record holder, who has been managing the VCM Medical Center since its inception. Dr. Rabensteiner will continue her work abroad. Dr. Gaebler, 43, a surgeon specializes in trauma and sports injury and is a sports enthusiast as well as a marathon finisher.
Dr. Bernhard Richter will be the race physician on race day. He is 37-year-old cardiologists who as a middle distance runner won the Austrian state championships 18 times. He has a marathon best time of 2:22:19.
