NCAA – Olympic Trials Champions
Last athlete to win NCAA and Olympic Trials title was Jeremy Wariner (400m) in 2004. The list of 2016 NCAA champions who are considered among the favorites for their respective events include Devon Allen (Oregon), 110H; Courtney Okolo (Texas), 400m; Donavan Brazier (Texas A&M), 800m; Clayton Murphy (Akron), 1,500m; Shamier Little (Texas A&M), 400m hurdles; Keturah Orji (Georgia), triple jump; Raven Saunders (Mississippi), shot put; DeAnna Price (Southern Illinois), hammer; and Maggie Malone (Texas A&M), javelin.
Youngest – Oldest – Longest
Sweet 16s – four 16-year-old women are entered in the Trials: Sydney McLaughlin (400H), Kate Murphy (1500), Sammy Watson (800) and Chanel Brissett (100H). The youngest man in the meet is high jumper Vernon Turner at 17.
The oldest athlete is 20K walker Ian Whatley, who is a spritely 57. Fellow walker Teresa Vaill at 53 is the oldest female competitor.
If Sydney McLaughlin makes the Olympic team she would be the youngest ever 400m hurdler for the United States.
Vashti Cunningham is the second consecutive Nevada prep looking to make noise in the women’s high jump. Gabby Williams, who placed fifth in 2012 at the age of 15, was also a Nevada high school product.
Donavan Brazier would become the youngest U.S. Olympian in the 800m.
Bernard Lagat would become the oldest U.S. Olympian in the 10,000m.
Amy Acuff will be seeking a sixth consecutive Olympic Games. She is currently tied at five for the most by an American. Acuff would also become the oldest U.S. Olympian in the high jump.
Casey Malone, now 39 years old, has been to six Olympic Trials in the discus.
Adam Nelson and Reese Hoffa have each been to three Olympic Games in the shot put.
Memorable Moments at last six Olympic Trials
2012 – Eugene
Ashton Eaton sets world record in winning decathlon, the first world record set in Olympic Trials since 1996.
Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh tied for third place in the 100m final.
2008 – Eugene
Three locally-based runners sweep the top positions in the men’s 800, eliciting a roar unlike any other at Hayward Field. The trio included Nick Symmonds, Andrew Wheating, and Christian Smith, who dove to claim the third spot ahead veteran Khadevis Robinson.
Jenn Stuczynski (now Suhr) cleared an American record of 4.92 (16-1 ¾) on her final attempt.
2004 – Sacramento
Jeremy Wariner dominated the 400m, bettering the field by .3 of a second. He had already claimed the NCAA title and would go on to win the Olympic gold. In doing so Wariner became the first man to do so since Lee Evans achieved the feat at 400m in 1968.
Gail Devers out-leaned Joanna Hayes by .002 of a second to win her fourth consecutive 100m hurdle title, becoming only the second woman to win four in a row in a single event in Olympic Trials history.
2000 – Sacramento
Michael Johnson produces a winning time of 43.68 in winning the 400m title, putting almost a full second on runner-up Alvin Harrison.
Marion Jones wins three events – 100m, 200m and long jump.
1996 – Atlanta
Michael Johnson breaks the world record in the 200m with a 19.66 clocking, four days after winning the 400m in 43.44. Later in the Olympic Games Johnson lowered the world record in the 200m to 19.32 in same venue.
Jackie Joyner-Kersee won the long jump, but finished second in the heptathlon, by three points to Kelly Blair. A twisted ankle in the heptathlon high jump slowed Joyner-Kersee in the 800m. In her fourth Olympic appearance, Joyner-Kersee earned a bronze medal in the long jump to close out a storied Olympic career.
1992 – New Orleans
Amid a massive promotional Dan vs. Dave campaign by Reebok, Dan O’Brien no-heights the decathlon pole vault to end his Olympic hopes while Dan Johnson won the decathlon with 8,649 points and went on to take bronze in Barcelona.
Running in a tutu, fashion-conscious Sandra Farmer-Patrick, a Jamaican Olympian in 1984, dominated the 400m hurdle final, winning in a time of 53.62 that topped the field by over a second.
