USA Track & Field – News – Records broken at 50 km Road Championships
INDIANAPOLIS — Ethan Coffey and Emily Harrison took down the men’s and women’s records at the 50 km Road Championships at Caumsett State Park on Long Island, N.Y., Saturday.
Ethan Coffey (Knoxville, Tenn.) was the overall winner, setting a course record of 2:53:32.78 as he upset the previous record holder Michael Wardian (Arlington, Va.), a four-time 50 km champion. Wardian finished in 2:59:31.69 for second. Coffey and Wardian led the three-man pack which also included back-to-back reigning champion Joseph Gray up until the 10-mile mark.
Wardian fell back and Gray ultimately dropped out altogether leaving Coffey comfortably finishing in first as his 2:53:32 lowered Wardian’s 2008 record of 2:55:05. Josh Ferenc (Saxtons River, Vt.) finished in third place with his time of 03:04:16.91
Emily Harrison (Flagstaff, Ariz.) finisehd in first place for the women and in fourth place overall with her time of 03:15:00.70, which shattered the 3:20:12 standard set by Jodi Schoppmann in 2011. Taryn Giumento Thomas (Scranton, Pa.) took second place in 03:48:25.54, and Tracy Meder (Stow, Ohio), finishing in 03:49:05.19, was third.
