USA Track & Field – News – Cain sets American high school and junior record at Prefontaine Classic

By admin 0

Racing against some of the top runners in the world, Mary Cain established an American high school and junior record in the 800-meters at the Prefontaine Classic Saturday in Eugene, Ore. Cain placed fifth in a time of 1:59.51.

Cain, who turned 17 years old in May, becomes the first American junior athlete to run under two minutes in the 800m. The time betters Kim Gallagher’s American junior record of 2:00.07 that she set in 1982.

"When I crossed the line, I knew it waas going to be close," Cain Said. When they officially announced it, I looked at the crowd and was like, 'Yes!'. I'm just so thrilled I brroke two minutes. Part of me was out there thinking today, no one has ever done this before. I'd be the first person to do it.

That has been my goal since eighth grade. I'm going to be that kid, I'm going to do it."
