„The long jump – The Sports legends Luz Long and Jesse Owens“ – Special exhibition on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Luz Long

By GRR 0

The legendary friendship between Luz Long (Carl Ludwig Long, 27th April 1913 -14th July 1943) and Jesse Owens (James Cleveland Owens, 12th September 1913 – 31st March 1980) is one of the poignant stories related to the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

For the two athletes (who met as rivals at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 where Owens won the gold medal, while Long won the silver medal), their mutual esteem and the respect for the games were more important than compliance with national socialist racist ideology and racial barriers.

The special exhibition on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the two world-class athletes offers for the first time a detailed biography of Luz Long and his relationships to his native town Leipzig.

Unpublished original documents and certificates, photographs and films (i.a. From the Long Family), are presented.

The exhibition is assisted by Förderverein Sächsisches Sportmuseum Leipzig e. V., the supporting organization of the Leipzig Sportsmuseum, and the Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper.
