“The artifact of the month” XX. – The Donations of the AIMS Congress in Durban for the AIMS MUSEUM „MARATHONEUM“ in Berlin – By Horst Milde
The organizers made a wonderful suggestion prior to the AIMS World Congress in Durban, South Africa in 2014, which was passed on to all of the participants of the congress: When they traveled to Durban, they were to each bring along with them race numbers from their events as artifacts for the AIMS Marathoneum in Berlin.
This request received an amazing response from all around the world: The organizers had to put out numerous tables in front of the congress hall to present all of the race numbers, as well as posters, medals, and other souvenirs.
It would be too much to list the origins of all of the race numbers, but most of the organizers jumped on the opportunity to share their materials with the museum—not only the race numbers, but also all kinds of materials that showcase their events.
The most race numbers were brought from events in Japan and China, which were presented along with t-shirts, medals, towels, accreditations, running bags of all sizes, honorary prizes, photo albums, wooden plaques, flags, hats, little nicely packaged gifts, and much more.
One special gift for the museum was not a race number, but rather an honorary prize from an African organizer, who brought with him a heavy trophy (several kilograms) made from stone.
There was one very special race number too, though: the Paris Marathon brought an autographed race bib belonging to a favorite, Kenenisa Bekele.
We had to keep an eye out for the displayed articles, as some of the participants apparently thought they would be nice gifts to bring home with them!
The large quantities of the souvenirs clearly were impossible to fit in the luggage to go back to Berlin. Many thanks to the AIMS organizers for packing it all up in numerous boxes to send to the Sport Museum – Marathoneum. It was not so easy to explain to the customs officials that these were not tradable goods, but rather donations to the museum.
We would like to thank all of the event organizers in the name of the Marathoneum for their support in collecting theses great contributions to the AIMS collection.
