“The artifact of the month” XIX – The „ATHENS MARATHON. THE AUTHENTIC” and the DONATIONS TO THE AIMS MARATHON MUSEUM „MARATHONEUM“ – By Horst Milde
The Athens Marathon – "ATHENS MARATHON. THE AUTHENTIC” – as it is now officially called, has often been my destination over the past few years…in conjunction with the AIMS Symposium, which used to be held in Marathon but now always takes place in Athens.
On the return flight to Berlin with “easyjet” with a suitcase has always been (almost too) full with artifacts from the event, there has always been the threat of having to pay an extra baggage fee. These artifacts have quickly found their way into the Berlin Sports Museum – AIMS Marathoneum – and have already been presented on this site.
A helpful hand was often provided Theodosis Livitsanos, the branch manager of AIMS in Athens. After the race he always put together a large package with collected and desired items (that didn’t fit into the suitcase) and sent it all to the AIMS Marathoneum.
Occasionally I also gave him pictures of the items that still hung as banners in the streets, because they had not been taken down yet before I left.
That is how an AIMS package with the requested items, including a sweatshirt, medals, ballpoint pens, accreditations, a scarf, brochures, posters, and street banners, arrived at the AIMS Marathoneum a few weeks later.
Gradually the participation of the Athens Marathon is increasing, which also reflects the importance of the event. The event is growing yearly, especially with foreign participants, who all want the opportunity to run the “mother of all races”.
