The “Artifact of the Month” XIII. – Rare museum artifacts from the Berlin Sports Museum/AIMS Marathon Museum of Running – Documents from a race that didn’t happen – Sandy Sislowitz and the New York City Marathon 2012 – Horst Milde reports
In September 2012 during her visit to the Berlin Marathon, “Sandy” Sislowitz from the New York City Marathon also paid a visit to the Berlin Sports Museum – AIMS Marathon Museum of Running. She was at the Expo in Berlin to promote not the NYC Marathon, but rather the Haile Gebrselassie Marathon in Ethiopia.
She brought with her diverse documents from the New York Marathon, such as diverse programmes, brochures and even a NYC street banner that adorned the streets of New York.
Sandy Sislowitz, who has helped run the NYC marathon for a long time, was not brought into associated with any other “Sandy’s” from New York in September 2012. A few weeks later, however, “Sandy” had a whole new connotation, as the 19th tropical storm and 10th hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricane "Sandy", wrecked havoc in New York and parts of the USA.
The planned ING New York City Marathon was cancelled due to “Sandy”.
The other Sandy was quite impressed with the AIMS MArathon Museum of Running during her visit in September, when Gerd Steins showed her the shelves filled with artefacts and documents from the biggest races in the world, including the New York City Marathon. Sandy admired the multitude of NYC posters from the past decades, and noted that the NYC marathon didn’t even have such good documentation of its own race.
Many Berlin runners, who participated in the NYC Marathon, contributed to this fabulous collection when they parted with their souvenirs and their running “devotionals” and passed them on to the museum.
Sandy Sislowitz not only liked the incredible collection at the Berlin Sports Museum from her own run, she loved it.
And Gerd Steins was able to convince her to procure more items from the NYC Marathon for the Berlin Museum.
After Hurricane Sandy hit NYC and the organisers had to cancel the race, she quickly started her procurement. Sandy Sislowitz recently sent the museum documents and artefacts from the race that did not happen.
The museum documents other races that didn’t happen as well. The current exhibit displays a poster for the “25 km de Berlin” organised by the French Allies dated 1980! However, the first time the “25 km de Berlin” took place was May 1981; no one knows why the event did not take place in 1980, but for sure it was not due to a hurricane!
The Berlin Sports Museum is deeply grateful to Sandy Sislowitz for contributing more items from her race to the Berlin collection.
