„The Artifact of the Month“ XII. – Museum Rarities from the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running – Henryk Paskal donates his valuable collection to the Berlin Sports Museum – Horst Milde reports

By GRR 0

Henryk Paskal/POL from Pila (known earlier as Schneidemühl), a successful marathon runner, event organiser, coach and organiser of running tours, is a man who is present at running events all around the world.

Every year he brings a bus load of Polish runners to the Berlin Marathon – which the Berlin Marathon greatly appreciates, as it has included champion Boguslav Psujek (1986) and three-time champion Renata Kokowska (1988/1991/1993). He has also made a name for himself internationally — and the Berlin Sports Museum – AIMS Marathon Museum of Running is thankful for the numerous individual donations he had given previously.

In this manner "specialties" from various Japanese races have made their way into the museum, such as race announcements, programmes, and results documentation.

Henryk Paskal has been "baiting" us for years that if we come visit the PILA Half Marathon (which GRR has written about previously), that we could come home with a "big catch" for the Sports Museum. That was one more reason to join John Kunkeler to visit the PILA Half Marathon on September 7, 2012.

On that date, Henryk Paskal not only held his race that included the Polish men's half marathon championships, but he also held his promise to present us with a rich donation of fabulous materials, sorted orderly by country and event.

This treasure included race announcements from around the world, information, medals, pins, souvenirs, race numbers, posters, accreditations and brochures from international running events from Europe, Asia and the USA from the past 30-40 years.

As he has also been a member of AIMS (Association of International Marathon and Distances Races) from its inception, he also had a neat collection of all of the correspondence from the past 30 years, which will nicely complement the historical records in the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running.

In a large room near the half marathon race number pick-up in the gym of a school, an exhibition of his collected "works" from around the world was presented: about 100 t-shirts were hung on the stall bars, and lined up below them in a long row were magazines and programmes from races around the world beginning in the mid-1970s; there were also unusual finds, such as medals and race numbers from Japan. His Japanese collection was enhanced with numerous decorative fans, which were given away as souvenirs at the races.

After the race, we were able to pack up these fans, as well as countless international magazines and brochures, into our car, making it almost tilt off to one side with all the extra weight.

For Henryk Paskal, it meant saying goodbye in stages to his collection of treasures, which he knows, however, will be in good hands in Berlin. Through this generous donation of his materials, the AIMS collection received a wonderful addition; the Japanese collection is now unparalleled, even in Japan.

Of course we hope to make it back to the PILA Half Marathon again next September!

Thank you Henry and Helena Paskal!
