Former Olympic champion Gabriela Szabo of Romania celebrated the 10th anniversary of her remarkable triple triumph in 1999 – being named World Athlete of the Year, European Athlete of the Year and World Sportswoman of the Year – during a memorable ceremony at the Romanian National Opera in Bucharest earlier this week.

The celebration included the screening of the most spectacular moments of her athletics career, speeches by people who impacted her career and a surprise dance performance by Szabo, the most decorated athlete ever to come from Romania.

An extraordinary performance of "The Symphonie Fantastique" by Hector Berlioz, choreographed by Gigi Caciuleanu and Razvan Mazilu as the prime dancer, was the highlight of a glittering evening.

More than 500 guests attended the event, including prominent Romanian sports personalities Ivan Patzaichin, Andreea Raducan, Marius Urzica, Monica Iagar, Diana Oprea, Nicoleta Grasu and Monica Rosu among others.

Szabo was awarded the World Sportswoman of the Year title in 1999 by the World Sport Press Association.

In a remarkable career as a middle-distance runner, Szabo achieved almost everything to which an athlete can aspire. Her list of achievements includes three world titles, three Olympic medals, two European indoor titles and a host of other medals across a number of disciples spread over all age groups.

Szabo, a member of the European Athletics Reflection Commission, continues to give back to her sports in a variety of capacities.
