Start into new dimensions for Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon
This year’s 26th Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon was a start into new dimensions for Germany’s oldest city marathon race. It was not only about Wilfred Kigen’s (Kenya) course record of 2:07:58 and Germany’s surprise winner Melanie Kraus (2:28:56). But the depth of the men’s elite field produced quality results never seen before in Frankfurt: Six runners achieved sub 2:10 times. Taking this aspect Frankfurt is number three in the world.
Only London and Amsterdam had more sub 2:10 results.
„This event has lifted the Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon up onto a new level,” said Race Director Jo Schindler, who was happy about more records regarding the mass race. With altogether 18,302 entries last year’s record of 17,478 was well broken. There were 11,507 marathon runners, 2,017 entries for the Mini-Marathon, 4,676 for the relay and 102 handbikers. In the marathon 9,506 athletes started and 9,167 finished the race – as many as never before. 290,000 people lined the course in ideal weather conditions on 28th October.
Interest in the TV coverage of the race was also as high as never before. The race was covered live by regional TV partner ,hr fernsehen’. TV ratings reached 20 percent, which was the highest viewing figure of the channel for the whole day. “During the whole of our coverage we had superb ratings,” said Ralf Scholt of ,hr fernsehen’ adding: „The elite field was put together in a perfect way.” Highlights of the race were broadcasted by a number of international TV stations as well.
„In Frankfurt we are now improving for many years. And together with our sponsors and partners we will continue to do so,” said Jo Schindler. Next year’s Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon will be staged on 26th October 2008.
