The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon  (42.2km) is a prestigious global city race open to a range of running enthusiasts from elite athletes to social runners.  Along the spectacular route, you will take in the famous natural beauty of Cape Town’s mountains and sea, as well as many of the city’s great attractions.

Running the marathon is unique way to experience the gorgeous highlights and the vibrant spirit of one of Africa’s most visited and most celebrated city.  It is an ideal race both for athletes who aim to achieve fast times, and for first-timers who want to finish their inaugural marathon. 

The route is wheelchair-friendly, and the 7 hour cut-off time can accommodate the social runner.

  • RACETEC time chips are being used – please note if no time-chip is purchased no result or position will be recorded.  For those runners who already own an existing YELLOW WINNING CHIP or an ORANGE RACETEC CHIP there is not need to purchase another.
  • Entries close at midnight on 5th September 2015, or when the maximum entry limit has been reached.  NO LATE ENTRIES accepted.
  • Professional Athletes’ Programme (PAP) – Due to numerous reasons including special drinks stations, organization, logistics, anti-doping & media, all international athletes and local athletes (who hope to qualify for prize money), need to apply and be accepted into the PAP, applications are to be sent through to the meeting organisers, for attention of the professional athlete co-ordinator, no later than 8 weeks prior to the event – e-mail address: PAP@capetownmarathon.com
  • PAP INVITED INTERNATIONAL ATHLETES: Please note that the 2015 SCTM is aspiring to achieve IAAF Gold Label status for 2016, this means that we are required to invite athletes from at least 5 countries and that these athletes should meet the following IAAF Gold Label Status standards; Gold Label Status Times (recorded within the past 36 months – from our race date of 20 September 2015)

    SANLAM CAPE TOWN MARATHON – PAP INTERNATIONAL GOLD LABEL STATUS QUALIFYING TIMES

    MARATHON: Men: 2:10:00 and Women: 2:28:00
    HALF MARATHON: Men: 1:01:00 and Women: 1:11:00
    10KM: 28:00 and Women: 32:00
  • All international athletes (particularly athletes who hope to qualify for prize money), including those who may be running for local clubs, will only be accepted if she / he represents herself / himself or if represented by an authorized athlete representative (as listed on IAAF.org for year 2015), and are required to present a written approval (a permit) from their National federations.  Proof of the fore-mentioned requirements, along with a copy of athlete’s passport need to be handed over to the event organisers, for the attention of the professional athlete co-ordinator, 4 weeks prior to the event taking place.  All athletes who do not present such permits and copies of passports within the given time-frame will NOT be eligible for prize money and the event organisers reserve the right to stop such athlete from taking part in the event.
  • PAP: LOCAL ATHLETES (SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENS): Local athletes will be considered to race within the PAP field provided they have qualified for at least an IAAF bronze label status time (recorded within the past 36 months – from our race date of 20 September 2015), all applications (including a motivating letter and athletes CV with times) need to be sent through to PAP@capetownmarathon.com.

SANLAM CAPE TOWN MARATHON RACE INFORMATION

RACE NUMBERS & KIT:

Race numbers must be placed on both the front and back of your running vest. Pins will be supplied.
• Race numbers are not to be worn on shorts.
• Running in your athletic-club colours is encouraged (no club colours, no qualification for team prizes); non-club members must run in non-branded running gear.
• Age group tags are indicated in the marathon race number and can replace the material age numbers.

SANLAM CAPE TOWN MARATHON SEEDING:

• The letter in front of your race number indicates your seeding pen.
• Age-group tags are indicated on your race number, and can replace material age numbers.
• Please be in your designated seeding pen by 6:20am.
• Please note that the 10km race will start at 6:50am, and will be routed down Granger Bay Boulevard, towards the Waterfront. We encourage participants to arrive early, and plan an access route prior to the race, as the start area will be congested.

RACETEC TIMING CHIPS & TIMES:

  • Please make sure that your Racetec chip is in the registration pack (if applicable). Scan as you leave the registration area to make sure it is functional.
  • Lace your chip securely in the laces of one of your running shoes, or use a Velcro strap to fasten it around your ankle. See more info on how to do this at: www.racetec.co.za/chip/running.
  • Wear your Racetec timing chip during the race to qualify for a position, race time and prizes. NO CHIP / NO TIME.
  • Racetec will provide an emergency helpdesk at the Tog Bag Drop-off area in Vlei Road, on the morning of the event.

WATER STATIONS: 

There are water stations situated at every 3km or less. There are water stations every 3km or less. Both Coca Cola and water will be available. To find out more about how much water to drink on race day visit our website.

TOILETS: 

There are toilet facilities at the start, at all water stations and at the finish. There will also be toilet banks at the following points along the marathon route:

  • On Civic Road – at 10km
  • On Rondebosch Common – 21km
  • At 26.8km, on Main Road, outside Groote Schuur Residence.
  • At the Grand Parade opposite City Hall – 33km
  • At Prestwich Museum – 37km

The following public toilets will be open for use:

  • The Company Gardens
  • Green Point Urban Park

MEDICAL:

Mediclinic are our medical partners, and will be looking after you on race day. For any medical emergencies call 021 417 4150.

  • There will be a full medical tent at the finish, and a medic with a golf cart will assist with potential collapses and transport runners to the race hospital.

Information relating to runners who have been admitted to the medical tent will be available at the information centre, located on the field at the finish.

SANLAM CAPE TOWN MARATHON:

  • At 21.1km, on Rondebosch Common.
  • At 26.8km, on Main Road, outside Groote Schuur Residence.
  • At 36km, at Government Avenue.
  • At 37km, Prestwich Museum precinct
  • There will be a full medical tent at the finish.
  • Several mobile ambulances or Medical Personnel will be stationed approximately every 5km along the route.

LITTER:

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon event is a climate neutral event. We are encouraging all runners to help us support our #DoNotLitter campaign. Please consider the environment and take action – here are some actions that you can assist us with;

  • Carry your own water (where possible) in a hydration pack or water bottle belt
  • Throw your used water sachets in the “CHUCK ZONES”. Please don’t litter by just dropping your water sachet in the road or on the pavement, the race will be providing many ‘Chuck Zones’ and ‘Bins’ so please ensure that you always look for one and dispose of your sachet in the bins provided, or carry the sachet till you can throw it away.
  • Dropping of sachets is NOT encouraged and NOT recommended – we are proudly a climate neutral event and we appreciate all the support we can get from you. Please encourage your fellow runners to support our “DO NOT LITTER” campaign

We aim to be sustainable and appeal to each and every runner to do their best to keep the City of Cape Town clean.
