Russian Athletics on Tuesday announced a provisional squad for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin after the conclusion of the National Championships in Cheboksary this weekend. The final selection will be announced on 2 August after the Russian Cup meet in Tula (1-2 August).
With the exception of two Beijing medallists, Andrey Silnov (High Jump) and Yevgeniy Lukyanenko (Pole Vault), who are still nursing injuries, the squad includes all the medallists from the Olympic Games.
Some places will be up for grabs in Tula, most notably the women's Pole Vault, where only Olympic and world champion Yelena Isinbayeva and national champion Yulia Golubchikova are certainties. Four contenders, namely Anastasiya Shvedova, Aleksandra Kiryashova, Tatyana Polnova and injured Svetlana Feofanova, will vie for the remaining two places.
Other open events are the men's 200m, Long Jump and Triple Jump, and, in the women's category, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles and Hammer.
Anna Alminova, who set a world lead in 800m at the nationals, has decided to opt out of the 800m in Berlin and will only concentrate on her primary event, the 1500m.
Olympic and world medallist Tatyana Lebedeva has been named in both the Long Jump and Triple Jump.
Hammer throw world record holder Tatyana Lysenko also makes a return, having achieved the qualification mark just in time.
