RUNNING USA – Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Adds 6K

By GRR 0

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon announced that it has added a 6K race over the famous Woodrow Wilson Bridge set for the same time as the half-marathon this year.

“We have had so many requests over the years to organize a shorter race over the bridge for those athletes who could not make the 13.1-mile distance,” Event Founder and Director Steve Nearman said. “So today we added a 3.73-mile race from Belle Haven Park on GW Memorial Parkway over the bridge into the same finish line festival in National Harbor as the half marathon.”

Both the 6K and half-marathon will start at 7 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2014. Registration is open at www.wilsonbridgehalf.com, with a discount for active public safety personnel from police, fire and emergency medical services. Nearman explained that many races, including the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon, provide discounts for active members of the military but rarely for active public safety personnel who also put their lives at risk to help others.

Now in its fifth year, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon begins at former president George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and travels over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge into the modern resort of National Harbor. Both races will be USATF-sanctioned and both courses will be USATF-certified.

Deemed one of the 27 best half marathons in the nation by Runner’s World Magazine last year, the race boasts one of the most scenic and historic courses in the country. This year’s event will benefit the following charity partners: Autism Speaks, Back on My Feet, Child & Family Network Centers, Rebuilding Together Alexandria Veterans Housing, RunningBrooke Fund and Capital Area Food Bank.
