RUNNING GERMANY: BERLIN – IRONMAN 70.3 Berlin: The Premier in the German Capital

By GRR 0

About 1,100 participants from 50 countries are expected at the premier of the IRONMAN 70.3 Berlin on June 16 in the German capital. We are very excited about this premier, and 600 volunteers will be joining us to assist in providing the best conditions possible for the participants.

The top starter is 2-time IRONMAN 70.3 World and European Champion, Michael Raelert, who will be testing his form in his new hometown in preparation for the IRONMAN European Championship on July 7 in Frankfurt. Another prominent participant is former Formula 1 World Champion, Jenson Button, an endurance sport enthusiast.

Two sheiks from the Bahrain royal family will also be competing, Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Sheik Nassar is president of the National Olympic Committee and member of the IOC, and Sheik Khalid is chairman of the national athletics association and responsible for matters of youth athletics in his country.

The race will be broadcasted live without commentary: see live stream

1. Important information: start, course, finish, check-in

The start of the swim is located on the northern bank of the Spree River near the bridge Elsenbrücke in the city district of Friedrichshain. The race starts off heading downstream. The water temperature is expected to be 17-18°C. Diabetics will receive a white swim cap to make them easily identifiable for the Medical Team. You can pick the caps up at the Help Desk on Saturday at the event venue.

The bike course leads to the boulevard Columbiadamm, with a short detour onto Mehringdamm (first turning point), on to the Tempelhof Airfields, where three loops will be raced (each including the bit on Mehringdamm). As there are often high winds on the Tempelhof Airfields (depending on the wind situation) disk wheels may be prohibited. This will be announced during the competition briefing on Saturday (11:30 am and 5:30 pm, see item 3).

Transition Zone 2, the running course and the finish are also all located on the Tempelhof Airfields on the south side of the hangar. The entrances are located at Gates 9 and 10 on Tempelhofer Damm. The subway (U-Bahn) and elevated train (S-Bahn) stations “Tempelhof” (U 6, S 41/42 Ringbahn) are located directly at the entrance to the Tempelhof Airfield at the finish area (Transition Zone 2/TZ2).

Check-in:
You can only check in at Transition Zone 1 (TZ1) with your athlete wristband, which you will receive at the athlete registration in the main event venue at Tempelhof. You have to pick up this wristband at the athlete registration before you go to the Bike Check-in in TZ1. You will get your ChampionChip at the Bike Check-in in TZ1.

Bike covers will be available at the PowerBar stand in TZ2.

2. Getting around with public transportation, shuttle on Sunday, June 16

There is limited parking at Tempelhof Airport. Please arrive by public transportation (see item 1), and remember that you have to purchase a ticket for your bike as well!

There will be a shuttle service to the start on race day: Shuttle Service to Start.

The fastest way to get from the start to the finish (or vice versa) is by S-Bahn (S41/S42 Ringbahn). It takes 10 minutes and runs between the stations “Tempelhof” and “Treptower Park” every ten minutes.

3. The schedule for Saturday and Sunday

The most important scheduling items for Friday, Saturday and Sunday:

Athlete registration on Friday (4-8 pm) and Saturday (11 am-6 pm) at the main event venue at Tempelhof Airfields (Transition Zone 2/Finish).
Pre-race briefing in English at 4 pm at the main event venue at Tempelhof Airfields (Transition Zone 2/Finish).
Check-in Transition Zone 1 (swim-bike/bicycle, helmet, Bike & Run bag) Saturday 1-7 pm, Stralauer Allee (start of the swim)
Check-in and Streetwear bag drop-off in Transition Zone 1 (Stralauer Allee) on Sunday starting at 6 am
Start: starting at 8 am in 8 waves until 9:30 am

Complete information about the schedule are available at the link Participant-Info, which every participant received via email.

It will NOT be possible to check in your bike and running gear on Sunday morning!

4. Bike service

There will be a bike service station provided by Stadler in both transition zones, and on Saturday during the Bike Check-In (1-7 pm).

5. Spectator information

Spectators can best watch the swim competition from the Elsenbrücke Bridge. The best way to get to the Tempelhof Airfields is by the “Ringbahn” elevated train line (4 stations, 10-minute travel time) entering at the Treptower Park station. To get to the Mehringdamm section of the bike course, take subway U6 (northbound) from station “Tempelhof” (3 stops).

7. After intense training or competition recovery is key

A message from PowerBar®:

Rapid recovery is a must during periods of heavy training and anytime you have more than one training sessions a day. In addition sports nutrition strategies help to promote training related adaptation processes which helps you to get the most from one training session to the next.

It’s important that you give your body the right nutrients and the right amounts. The body needs:

Carbohydrates to refill its glycogen stores
High quality protein to repair the damaged muscle tissue and to build new muscle tissue
Fluid and electrolytes (especially sodium) for efficient rehydration

As soon as possible after training – ideally before taking a shower –the body should be supplied with a combination of carbohydrates and protein, in addition to sufficient fluid. If you don’t feel like eating a meal or solid foods try a recovery beverage: PowerBar® RECOVERY Drink is designed for immediate use after exercise to provide your body with high quality protein sources, carbohydrates and minerals. A delicious PowerBar® PROTEIN PLUS 30% bar in combination with fluid or a Protein Shake (e.g. PowerBar® PROTEIN PLUS 92% Shake) possibly mixed with a ripe banana are other options directly after a ride.

8. Three times the performance, twice the fun: Celebrate with ERDINGER Alkoholfrei at the finish

A message from ERDINGER Alkoholfrei
