Eliud Kipchoge won the 42nd edition of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON this morning with a world leading time of 2:04:01. The 30 year-old improved his personal best in fine weather conditions by four seconds, beating a world-class field despite problems with the insoles of his shoes.

Fellow Kenyan Eliud Kiptanui was second with 2:05:22 and Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa took third in 2:06:57. Running her second marathon 32 year-old Gladys Cherono of Kenya broke the 2:20 barrier with a world leading time of 2:19:25.

Aberu Kebede took second in 2:20:48 with fellow-Ethiopian Meseret Hailu third in 2:24:33. 41,224 runners from 131 nations entered the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON, which is an Abbott World Marathon Majors race.
