I was most fortunate to attend the Kathrine Switzer Luncheon last Friday, hosted by the Melbourne Marathon. Kathrine's story never ceases to inspire hundreds of thousands of women (and men) around the world and her contribution to women's running is as relevant today as it was in 1967 when she was the first woman to enter the Boston Marathon. Last weekend saw us at the Townsville Running Festival and what an event this was! The team at Townsville put on a sensational event and they've been rewarded for their efforts with continual growth in their numbers. The course is picturesque, as it flows alongside the waterfront and the after party at the Watermark is an absolute hit with the runners.

The street party, which has been going for 10 years now and is supported by the local community, keeps the smiles on the runners faces as they clap, cheer and support each and every runner until the last one is heading for home. Anyone wanting to run a well organised, friendly event should consider Townsville. Congratulations to all the locals for an amazing event!

Thanks to the initiative of medibank Melbourne Marathon race director Greg Hooton, running royalty – in the form of Kathrine Switzer and her husband Roger Robinson – paid a visit to Melbourne last week. 

Kathrine has paved the way for women's running since the moment in 1967 when her life changed forever as a result of an over zealous race director in the Boston Marathon. Kathrine's completion of this marathon was integral to the development of women's running worldwide.

Kathrine held the audience spellbound with her re-living of the event and inspired everyone to pull on their shoes and go out for a run! 

A true pioneer of women's running, Kathrine has been the recipient of many awards in acknowledgement of her contribution in this area.
