The Vienna City Marathon is Austria’s biggest one-day sporting event with about 24,000 participants from more than 80 countries. To be held on April 29th, 2007, the course leads alongside the most impressive touristical sights of modern and historic Vienna – just like a visit to a museum wearing shorts.
As a runner, you start in front of the UN Office Buildings, cross the river Danube, run through the vast recreational
area of „Vienna Prater“, head towards the city center with buildings such as the State Opera on the historic boulevard of the Ringstraße on the way, pass the former imperial residence of Schönbrunn and finish at Heldenplatz in the very centre of Vienna.
This most impressive cultural course is flat and easy to run.
Winners in 2006 were Lahoucine Mrikik of Morocco who set a course record 2:08:20 and Tomo Morimoto of Japan in an excellent time of 2:24:33. Thewomen’s course record of 2:23:47 was run by Maura Viceconte (ITA) in 2000. Main event with invited international athletes is the marathon with about 7,000 entries. Side events comprises of a half-marathon, a relay marathon and junior races.
Marathon in the world capital of music
The marathon’s main claim is “Run Vienna – Enjoy Classic”. As the Vienna City Marathon is the Marathon in the world capital of music, classical music will be played on parts of the course during the race. Runners have the great opportunity to expierence Vienna’s magnificent sights and it’s unique music while running. Get
motivated by the likes of W.A Mozart and Johann Strauß who experienced their most creative and successful years in Vienna.
All inclusiv package “Simply classic!”
The all inclusive package “Simply classic!” proved to be very popular in the past and is a good choice for everybody who wants to combine running and culture in a suitable way. The package includes three nights with breakfast in a traditional Vienna 4 star hotel, a guided City Tour “on the footsteps of famous composers”, entrance fee for the Albertina art collection, 72 hours free public transport, registration fee for the Vienna City Marathon and a ticket for a Mozart & Strauß concert.
Although an impressive mass of runners is underway on the streets of Vienna, participants will have enough room to move and enjoy their marathon. About one third of the marathon runners came from outside Austria; a figure that clearly highlights the international popularity of Vienna City Marathon. The organising team
