THE MARATHON RACE THROUGH HISTORY

The Marathon event lies 2500 years back in Greek history. After the battle (490 b.c.) against the Persians, a Greek soldier run 42,195 meters from Marathonas to Athens to announce the glorious victory of the Greeks against the barbarians.
This historical run was revived on the same course for the most glorious event during the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.The winner of this original Marathon Race was Spyros Louis.

In 1983, SEGAS organized the 1st Athens Classic Marathon, dedicated to the Balkan Champion, Gregoris Lamprakis.
The Marathon event had its best moments during the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games. A specific venue was constructed in order to host the Marathon Start in the City of Marathonas. The Olympic and Paralympics athletes finished their race in the most beautiful and historical Stadium of the world, the Panathinaikon Stadium.
The last 7 years – under the official sponsorship of Alpha Bank – the Athens Classic Marathon has met the high standards set by IAAF and AIMS.
In 2006, the President of the Hellenic Republic set the Athens Classic Marathon under his auspices.

INTERNATIONAL MARATHON MOVEMENT

The Marathon races bring million people from every place around the world in a peaceful meeting on the roads of hundred towns and cities.
More than 700 Marathon Races all over 5 continents are being organized every year and it is estimated that more than 5 million runners participate in these races.
In Greece, more and more people every year are joining running as a way of leisure and participate in several road races. SEGAS, the Hellenic Athletics Federation organizes the majority of these running events.
The organizations that promote Marathon and Road Races internationally are AIMS and IAAF.

ORGANIZATIONAL FACTS

• More than 1500 paid staff and volunteers involved (administration staff, judges, medical staff, police force, municipalities’ representatives, sponsors, artists, volunteers)
• The runners are offered water, refreshments, fruits and power bars during the course
• Official Opening Ceremony held one day before the event at the historical site of the Marathon Tomb and the Marathon Museum
• Wide video boards inside Panathinaiko Stadium for the spectators
• Registration and Distribution Centre operates over three days
• A Marathon Expo is organized parallel to the distribution of bib numbers and race packages

MARATHON RACE BASIC FACTS

The course used for the Athens Classic Marathon is its biggest advantage. It is the original, the authentic Olympic course of 42,195 meters.
The Start of the Athens Classic Marathon is given at 09:00 at the Marathon Start Olympic Venue. The Marathon Power Walking event start at 07:00 starts and it is held on the same course.
The finish takes place inside the Panathikaiko Stadium, the ancient Marble Stadium of Athens (1896 Athens Olympic Games Venue).
The age limit for someone to participate in the marathon race is 18+.

5KM & 10KM ROAD RACES BASIC FACTS

The 10km Road Race was held for the first time in 1998 as a parallel event. Since 2006, one more parallel event, the 5km Road Race, is being organized. The purpose of these road races is to attract more runners, of any age and physical conditions, to participate in this important sport event.

5km Road Race
The 5km Road Race starts at 09:30 in front of the Panathinaiko Stadium. The course runs the historical Athens centre, passing by significant building and archaeological monuments, among them the unique hill of Acropolis. The finish takes place inside the Panathinaiko Stadium.

10km Road Race
The 10km Road Race starts at 09:30, as well, in front of the Panathinaiko Stadium. The course of the 10km Road Race will be out and back, running the first 5km on the opposite direction of the Marathon Race and, then turning back and finishing in the Panathinaikon Stadium.

The age limit for the someone to participate in the 5km and 10km Road Races is 12+.

• Family Registration – It offers a discount of 10 Euros for each additional (one or two) member of the same family participating, with regard to the Individual Registration.

An additional 5 Euros discount is offered in case of schools teams

PARTICIPATION (RACE) PACKAGE

The Full Participation Package that is offered to those living abroad includes the following:

• provision of bib number,

• provision of timing chip,

• provision of commemorative medal,

• transport to the Marathon Start,

• provision of water, soft drinks and medical services during and after the race,

• Participation Certificate with the final and intermediate times of the runner,

• a sport bag with commemorative presents (towel, key ring, pin, card postal, poster) and presents by our sponsors,

• T-shirt of the race in which the runner participates,

• free use of the public Transport Means, including those from and to the Athens Airport (3 days before και 2 days after the Race)

The revenues from the Hellenic Union of Runners for Health team registration will be donated from SEGAS to a non governmental organization.

Participation of Greek school team will be free for the 5km Road Race.

An environmental recycling program is carried out during the Athens Classic Marathon, in cooperation with <> supported by Coca Cola Hellas.
