Marathon talk this week has, of course, centred on Olympic gold medallist Eliud Kipchoge. Having now won seven out of his eight marathons and finished second in the other – all major races and, with the exception of Rio, all in sub 2:06 times – he is legitimately in the frame to be considered "the greatest marathoner of all time."

If you take yourself back 26 years, it was Australia's Steve Moneghetti who was the talk of the marathon world. He was seeking a world class performance and he opted to run the Berlin Marathon – not because it had its current reputation as the world's fastest marathon but because it would be the first Berlin Marathon after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The rest in history – Mona won the race, becoming the first person to break 2:10 in Berlin. His winning time of 2:08:16 was the fastest time in the world in 1990 and remains the fastest time by an Australian on a 'World Record accepted' course.

Mona has not been back to Berlin since that historic victory but that will all change next year when he joins RunFun Travel to host our 2017 BMW Berlin Marathon tour.
