Rich „booty” for the Berlin MARATHONEUM at the 21st AIMS World Congress in Athens—Horst Milde reports
The 21st AIMS World Congress was held in Athens from November 10-13, 2016, in conjunction with 34th “Athens Marathon—The Authentic”, which took place on Sunday, November 13, 2016 with about 50,000 participants.
This was also the celebration of 120 years of the MARATHON—which premiered at the 1st Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, connecting the cities of MARATHON and Athens.
Before the last Congress in Durban, South Africa in 2014, all AIMS members were encouraged to bring along with them items such as race numbers, medals, posters, and souvenirs from their races to donate to the MARATHONEUM, the AIMS Museum of Running, in Berlin.
The Berlin Sports Museum—which was established at the 9th AIMS World Congress in Macau in 1994 as AIMS Marathonmuseum of Running – now renamed as “MARATHONEUM” —has received financial support since 2008 to assist in the documentation of the sport of running and athletics for future generations.
This good idea was repeated for the congress in Athens, and a large quantity of souvenirs from the many races around the world arrived with the members—too many, in fact, to fit in the suitcases destined for Berlin. But the boxes filled with donations from many races will be arriving by mail in Berlin soon.
The AIMS Gala also took place in Athens, where the best marathon runners in the world from the past four years were honoured. The invited guests were also encouraged to bring along commemorative items for the museum from their impressive careers.
Last year, marathon world champion Mara Dibaba (ETH, 2:27:45) and BERLIN MARATHON champion Kipchoge (KEN, 2:04:00) brought souvenirs with them, which we reported about here as well.
This year, Jemima Sumgong (KEN) received the AIMS award for best female marathon runner in the world in 2016.
For years she has been presenting top times for the marathon, including two second-place finishes (Boston in 2012 and Chicago in 2013). In 2015, she placed fourth at the World Championships, and this spring she triumphed in London in 2:22:58, despite being caught up in a spill.
Thereafter she was considered a favourite for the Olympic Gold.
Under difficult climatic conditions in Rio, she became Olympic champion in 2:24:04. Jemima Jelagat Sumgong (b. December 21, 1984) is married to her running partner Noah Talam and is the mother of a daughter.
Jemima Jelagat Sumgong also received a request to bring along commemorative objects from her career, and she obliged.
Gerd Steins from the Berlin Forum for Sport History “leapt for joy” when Jemima Sumgong unpacked her bag.
Her goodies included her original race number from the marathon at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio, the national jersey for Kenya, her original running shirt from the London Marathon in 2016 and her running shoes, all autographed.
That is not the kind of gift that the MARATHONEUM receives every day, thus the “leap” by Gerd Steins.
This further promotes the MARATHONEUM as a leading museum of international running and athletics. We will be reporting about the gifts from the various event organisers soon.
Our gratitude goes out to Jemima Jelagat Sumgong, who was able to part from her “golden” mementos so soon.
