HONOLULU (14-Dec) -– The 53rd Honolulu Marathon saw 32,034 runners depart from Ala Moana in the marathon and companion Start to Park 10-K, pushing through an early downpour before conditions improved as the morning unfolded. Finishers are still coming in.

“Everyone’s goal is essentially the same — to do the best they can,” said Honolulu Marathon Association President Dr. Jim Barahal. “For a large majority, it’s simply to finish.”

At the front of the marathon, Tsegay Weldlibanos of Eritrea surged past the defending champion to claim the men’s title, while Calli Hauger-Thackery of Great Britain captured the women’s crown, becoming the event’s first British champion.

In the wheelchair races, Kota Hokinoue of Japan claimed the men’s victory and Susannah Scaroni of the United States won the women’s title, delivering world-class performances on Honolulu’s streets.

Local athletes were also among the top finishers, led by Air Force Lt. Colonel Ben Payne of Honolulu and Macy Putman of Haleiwa as the top Hawaii residents, with Gabriel Tom of Honolulu and Caitlyn Tateishi of Hilo the first kama‘āina across the line.

The day also featured remarkable personal milestones. Chikira Abe, a 94-year-old Honolulu resident, finished in 7:52:38, completing his 40th consecutive Honolulu Marathon. Jerold Chun, originally from Honolulu, and Gary Dill of Honolulu — the only participants to have competed in every Honolulu Marathon since 1973 — were also on the course. Chun finished in 7:00:50, while Dill remains en route to the finish.

About the Honolulu Marathon

The Honolulu Marathon was first run in 1973 and will celebrate its 53rd running on December 14, 2025.

It is the fourth largest marathon in the United States and still unique among major city marathons in that it does not have a cut-off time.

The Honolulu Marathon attracts many first time marathoners and is proud to allow everyone the chance to finish.

43,000 registered for the 2025 Honolulu Marathon Weekend.
