Prokopcuka, Martinez make it to the podium at Edinburgh Great Run – European Athletics (EAA) – NEWS

Former Half Marathon World Championships Bronze Medallist Jelena Prokopcuka registered a remarkable performance on Sunday to finish second at the Edinburgh Great Run. Spaniard Chema Martinez also made it to the podium finishing third in the men's race.

Athens Olympic Marathon bronze medallist Deena Kastor of USA made a victorious return to international competition, after the Beijing heartbreak, registering a world-class win.

Kastor broke her foot three miles into the marathon in Beijing but was back to her best with a great 10k performance to take the win in 32 minutes, 38 seconds.

Three-time winner Jelena Prokopcuca fell short in face of an inspired show by 36-year-old Kastor. The Latvian has two New York Marathon victories and two runner-up places in Boston in her CV, but she was 36 seconds down on Kastor's winning 32:38.

Sally Barsosio of Kenya, a former world 10,000-meter champion, also made it to the podium finishing in 33:34.

Hungarian Aniko Kalovics finished fourth clocking 33:42.

Katrina Wootton was the first Brit across the line finishing seventh in 34min 18sec.

Micah Kogo won the men's race with fellow Kenyan Bernard Kipyego second and Spain's Chema Martinez third.

Portugal´s Rui Pedro Silva finished fourth with a timing of 29:35.

The first British male to finish was Mike Skinner who came seventh in 30min 32sec.
